Preparing For Your Nature Therapy Program with Tam

A Message From Tam of Toadstool Walks

Hi, my name is Tam (they/them) and I am looking forward to guiding and accompanying you on our upcoming Nature Therapy Program.

Below is some information about what to expect and what to bring to ensure that you will have what you need to be comfortable outside for the duration of our time together.

What To Bring

Note: These are simply considerations. Bring nothing or bring everything. Trust your knowing on what will best support you.

  • Something to sit on such as a light camp chair, blanket, towel or small tarp. We will be sitting and the ground may be wet or cold.

  • Comfortable walking shoes and comfortable clothes with an extra warm layer. We will be moving slowwww so dress warmer than you would if you were going on a regular walk. Be prepared for cooler temperatures and possible rain. Unless there is significant rain or storm, we will continue with our program so, please check the weather and consider bringing an umbrella or whatever you may need to feel comfortable. For hot summer days, we will stay in shaded areas.

  • Bottle of water or thermos of tea

  • Bug Repellant

  • Sun Protection (sunblock, hat, sunglasses, etc)

  • A light backpack to carry whatever you bring so that your hands are free to explore

What to Expect

Nature therapy is a practice of slowing down and engaging our senses. Our time together will combine rest and wandering, interspersed with facilitated group gatherings and solo time. All the prompts, invitations, ways of sharing and participating are optional and wide open to interpretation.  Unlike hiking, outdoor recreation and adventure, there will be no set destination or achievement focused event. We will not travel more than a quarter to half a mile at the most. Unlike birding, plant species identification and other kinds of naturalist educational programs, our emphasis will be on awakening our senses in community with the natural world in a way that does not require us to “do” anything beyond offering our attention to our natural surroundings and each other.
